Vol. 2 ix, 489 including appendices and index, (2) pp, publisher's list, frontis portrait plus 1 portrait plate each with tissue guards. Bound in dark blue cloth with blind-ruled frames to upper and lower boards, spine lettered and ruled in gilt, light greyish-brown glazed endpapers.

Light rub to boards. Spines slightly darkened with vertical creases to vol. 2, gilt rubbed, head and tail of spines crushed with small nicks. Small early ink signature to free endpaper in each volume. Internally clean otherwise. Binding tight. Rare title.

Sir Charles Lyell (1797-1875) Scottish geologist. Knighted for his achievements which laid down the foundations of evolutionary biology and a general understanding of the processes through which the Earth developed gradually over aeons. These volumes were edited by his sister-in-law.
