xxv, (1), 545 including index, (4) pp. publisher’s advertisements. Plate illustrations, charts and maps, many folding, including map of Scotland in back pocket, text illustrations and diagrams. Moderate brown cloth over bevel-edged boards with icebergs stamped in gilt to upper board and spine. Lettered in gilt, decorated in black. Pale orange floral-patterned endpapers.
Some rub and wear to spine ends and outer corners of cloth which are slightly exposed. Minor rub to upper joint. Back hinge split and professionally repaired. Binding still tight. Brown damp stain to bottom outer corner which has spread very minimally to the outer corner margins of occasional leaves, not affecting text. Leaf edges a bit dulled. Previous owner’s signature and small bookplate to front endpapers. Still a sound copy with plates, folding maps and charts in near fine condition.
James Geike (1839 – 1915) Scottish geologist. Served on the Geological Survey from 1862 to 1882 and, subsequently, as professor of geology and mineralogy at the University of Edinburgh. His focus on the origin of surface features through glacial action led to the publication of this, his chief work, in 1873.
