The Shooting Man's Bedside Book
The Shooting Man's Bedside Book
'B.B.' (Denys Watkins-Pitchford). London: Eyre and Spottiswoode, 1948.
16mo., xx, 479, (5) pp. of blank charts for "Game Record". India paper. Frontis plus text and full-page wood-cut illustrations and drawings. Smaller, pocket-size book bound in limp dark greyish-red leather ruled in gilt with small gilt illustration to the bottom outer corner of front cover, spine lettered in gilt. Top edge stained to match covers.
Leather surfaces, edges and joints have some rub and mild wear, more so to spine. Light marks to upper and lower covers. Vertical creases to front board from reader use, more noticeable on the inner paste-down. Light rub to gilt. Previous owner's ink signature to front free endpaper. Still a very tight, clean, presentable copy. Scarce in this de-luxe binding.
The book contains much useful practical information but is chiefly concerned with accounts of actual experiences of hunters in the field and to this end the author has selected a compilation of what he considers to be "the best descriptive writing on the sport". Included are essays and extracts from works by W. H. Hudson, Richard Jefferies, Peter Scott, Robert Louis Stevenson, among many others.
