8vo., in sixteens. xvii, (1) blank, 467 including index,, xvii,(3) pp. The final twenty pages contain 18pp. of illustrated contemporary advertisements, 2pp. of publisher's ads. There is also a blank page, headed 'Notes', at the end of each chapter. Frontis photo portrait of the author plus nine photo plates all laid down on heavy dark brown card stock and each with tissue guard, from photographs by Charles Reid. Text plans and one further photo plate throughout. Bound in red buckram with photo laid to upper board, titles in gilt to upper board and spine, gilt advertisement for White Horse Whisky to centre of lower board. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Olive-green ribbon marker.

Boards are uniformly faded to pale red, spine more so to pale brown. A few small cover stains and scratch marks. Head, tail and outer corners mildly crushed with minor wear. Mild rub to joints. Internally clean and tight.
